After completing his medical training in Italy Dr. Pongiglione has been clinical  fellow in Pediatric Cardiology at the Hospital for Sick Children of Toronto under the preceptorship of Dr. Robert M. Freedom. Back in Italy he has been in charge of the cath-lab at the Istituto Giannina Gaslini Children’s Hospital in Genoa, Italy, where he was promoted to Cardiology Division Chief in 1999 and  Head of the Cardiovascular Department in 2001.  In 2009 he moved to Rome, Italy, holding the position of Director of the Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery at the Ospedale Pediatrico Bambino Gesù and of the Centro Cardiologico del Mediterraneo.  Around 400 people work in the combined Department that totals 600 open heart cases and 700 interventional procedures per year. 

His area of expertise is transcatheter intervention and hybrid therapies. In 2004 he established the first formally approved hybrid cath-lab in Italy at the Istituto Giannina Gaslini. 

Dr. Pongiglione co-authored 59 papers in international journal and  has been the clinical coordinator of the Health-e-Child project, a 17 Million Euro project sponsored by the EU commission, focusing in the disease modeling of post surgery Tetralogy of Fallot  (www.health-e-child.org). At present he is the clinical coordinator of the Sim-e-Child project (www.sim-e-child.org), another European project on disease modeling of congenital aortic arch anomalies in children.
